Questions You Should Ask

When considering a residence of any sort for a family member or loved one, there are things you should consider and questions that should be asked.  This provides for your peace of mind but more importantly, ensures quality care for the resident.

Are you encouraged to stop in and take a tour of the residence?

Do the care services provided meet the needs of the resident?

What choices are available for accommodations / apartments?

Are additional services available should the resident require them?

Can personal items be brought from home?  Are thre any restrictions?

Are residents allowed to have their own cars?

Are there visitation policies or is the residence available for visits at anytime?

What emergency plans are in place for things such as fire, power outages, etc.?

Is the facility clean and safe?

Are the individual rooms / apartments bright and cheery and are the common areas comfortable, open and fun?

Is the family involved with the resident and staff in developing any necessary care plans?

What are the staff priorities?  Are they warm and caring?

Is continuing education a priority?

Does a nurse oversee medical aspects of resident services?

Which services are included in the standard rates and what are required additional fees?

How does the residence manage patient emergencies?  Are doctors available at the residence or is the patient transported to a nearby hospital?

Are the resident activities well-rounded and do they address the interests of your loved one or family member?

What are the meal plan options and can special dietary needs be met?

Are all menus directed and / or approved by a licensed dietician?
